energy continuum

A concept used to describe the type of respiration demanded by different physical activities. Those activities demanding 100 per cent anaerobic respiration (e.g. 100 metre sprint) are at one end of the continuum; those requiring almost 100 per cent aerobic respiration (e.g. the marathon) are at the other end. In between these two extremes are activities requiring different combinations of aerobic and anaerobic respiration.
